| The Oysterbeds nature reserve is
one of my favourite birding places. |
| |
| |
| the Oysterbeds are call this
because they used to be where oysters where grown then they
where abandoned and till the 1980s when the walls where
rebuilt by dumping tens of thousands of tons of builders
waste. Some years later this was removed and the site managed. |
| |
| Now it is area that's great for
birding. From may to July Little Terns, Common Terns, Black
Headed and Mediterranean Gulls, ring plover nest here. Due to
the Little Tern being on the list of schedule 1of the
1981 wildlife and countryside act this means it is protected
if someone disturbed them when they are breading the are
liable for hefty fines. At this time of year the Oysterbeds
have a number of volunteer wardens of witch I am one we are
there to keep an eye on goings on stop people disturbing the
birds and answer any questions visitors may have. Sadly I
spend most of my time there as a warden asking dog walkers to
keep there dogs out of the lagoon that has a island in it that
the birds nest on. As I say sadly because some not all but
some of them can get abusive about being asked to keep there
dog out of the water. If you are a dog owner please please
don't let your dog in the water at this time and preferably on
a lead. |

| During the winter vast numbers of
waders can be seen around the harbour and roosting on the sea
walls. tens of thousands of Dunlin. Oystercatcher, Redshank,
Grey plover, Ring plover, Curlew, Bar-Tailed Godwit ect. |
| |
| Other birds that can be seen
around here are Great Crested Grebe, Black Necked Grebe, Brent
Goose, Goldeneye, Kingfisher, Teal, Wigeon, Common Sandpiper
ect. I have seen Red-Throated Diver too. |
