Sinah Lake

December 2002
Sinah lake was once a gravel pit but now it is a fresh water fishing lake. It is 15 acres in size, there are reeds, sedge, lily's, and a couple of small islands and there is a small pond separated from the main lake by a bank. This is a perfect nursery for ducklings eg. tufted duck as it is shallow with lots of weed for them to eat and there is strictly no fishing in it. There are two ways in. The first is the main gate, this lets you in the north side. You need a key to get in. You are now in the middle of the site, you can go left or right. You get to this entrance by going down Ferry Road and turning left before Sinah Warren. The other way in is by going up Links Lane. This would take you to the "Hayling golf club" but half way up you turn right. There the is a metal gate which you don't need a key to get in to this side of the lake if you are walking or on a bike. If you are in a car you will need a key.

You need a licence to enter the site if you were fishing it would cost more than £75.00 but if you wont to go birding you can get a non-fishing associates licence this costs £6.00 and you need a key. This is £5.00 but if you give it back you get your money back. This also lets you in to all the "Hants & Sussex anglers alliance". this licence is for one year. you can look through the fence but you won't get a very good view
Yes they did spell my name wrong.

Birds that should be there.
these birds should be seen on most trips.

Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen, Gulls, Cormorant, Grey Heron. Terns and other birds like Pochard and Canada Goose can be seen there at the right time of year. Also there are two domestic Geese that are thought to have been there 35 years

Birds I have seen there once or not regularly.
Cackling Goose, Little Egret, Little Grebe, Common Sandpiper, Reed Warbler, Yellow Legged Gull, a Goosander has been seen there but not by me.
There was a Kingfisher there it was there for a couple of months but I have not seen it recently.

notes
Due to it being one of the only fresh water lakes on the island if not the only one gulls come here to bathe in good numbers I have seen Black Headed, Herring, Yellow Legged, and Common gull. terns also come to bathe both Sandwich and common.

In the summer swallow and house martin come here for the flies and fresh water to drink.

Next to the lake on the north side there is a piece  of land with bushes and grass. From the main gate you can see a lot of gorse bushes there is a part though this and in these you can see small birds like Finches these attracts raptors like Sparrowhawk.

a short distance down Ferry Road is the Kench that is a very good place for waders.
